Dawn Casavant

Dawn has volunteered her time and services to the community of Winchendon by introducing Community Builders fellow Christine House's program, Kids Community Connection, to Winchendon's elementary school. After a little guidance from Christine on the details of the program, Dawn took the ball and ran with it. She brought her own vision to the program, tailoring Kids Community Connection to the needs of the Winchendon community with outstanding results. Currently 250 students have made 673 community connections, providing over 500 volunteer hours within the Winchendon community! Dawn's "can do" attitude to help the children of Winchendon experience the value of volunteerism is extraordinary.

Art & Jean Merriam

Art and Jean have been active volunteers at ARC Community Services in Fitchburg for the past 15 years. The Merriams, along with some help from family, developed a unified soccer program for adults and children with developmental disabilities. Currently this program has blossomed from one to six teams. Not only do the Merriams coach a team, they also recruit and train other volunteers to coach the remaining soccer teams as well as four basketball teams, four volleyball teams and one softball team. Art and Jean's commitment to allow any and all developmentally disabled athletes an opportunity to participate in a team sport speaks to the heart and soul of their volunteer efforts.

Susan Lowe

Although Susan works at the Greater Gardner Community Health Center, she is best known for the volunteer services she provides above and beyond her job responsibilities. Susan started a food pantry for clients of the GGCHC. She has started a "Neighbor in Need" program where people list items needed and others donate the needed items. To help with holiday shopping, Sue enlisted volunteers to wrap donated gifts for families in need. She has worked tirelessly with local organizations to provide transportation and housing. Veterans who need help to obtain services are another area that Susan has volunteered to help with. Susan Lowe is always helping others; changing lives, one person at a time.

Gail Murphy, RN

Gail's dedication and commitment to improving her community is evident in Barre. Gail is founding member of the East Quabbin Alliance (EQUAL), a community- based and run nonprofit for healthier communities.

As an active steering committee member Gail volunteers to maintain the archives, writes articles for the local newspaper about EQUAL, assists in programs such as the Walk For Life and mobilizes other volunteers to send care packages to our soldiers. One of Gail's greatest accomplishments is the Barre Teen Center. Despite the challenges involved, Gail is mainly responsible for the reopening of the center, not once but twice! By seeking compromise, building on community strengths and providing quiet but crucial leadership, Gail's volunteer efforts are a powerful catalyst for positive social change in Barre.
